Jenna I just loved how, in this instance of Dwight and Pam teaming up, just how immediately infected by his bad ideas that she was. Because she was out for vengeance. It was very funny to me.Â

â nope, puppy dog eyes arenât going to work this time! â with jim halpert PLEASEEEE
puppy dog eyes wonât work this timeâŚ
(warnings. none. purely fluff!)
âNo, Y/N weâre not going to that stupid Marvel comic convention! We do it every year.â Jim spoke to his wife as they walked into their job this morning.
Y/N and Jim met at their job eight years ago when she started out as a sales rep. It was her first big girl corporate job and she was nervous but thanks to Jim, she felt comfortable working there.
âBut baby, I thought you loved the comic convention!â She whined quietly as she sat her purse down on her chair. Jim shook his head smirking a bit but still trying to stay firm.
âNo, thatâs you that loves those comic cons.â He rebutted. Y/N pouted as she shrugged sadly taking a seat deciding to leave the subject for right now.
All throughout the day, Y/N kept begging Jim to take her to the comic con. From the emails to the hint dropping, she couldnât stop. She was determined to win this battle one way or another.
Speaking of the Halpert wife, she sat at her desk that was placed next to her husbandâs. She glanced over to her husband who was looking at something on his computer, most likely writing an email, she smiled to herself as she softly kicked him trying to get his attention.
Once he looked up, she smirked at him then gave him the best puppy dog eyes she could. Jim looked at her with a face, an all knowing one.
âNope, nu-uh. Puppy dog eyes arenât gonna work this time.â

THE OFFICE'S HALLOWEEN
Jim Halpert x gn!Reader, but Pam and Dwight are also in this. :) Word count: around 600 Summary: Reader needs to quickly think of a Halloween costume to not get K.O.'d by Dwight's ego. Author's note: I became obsessed with X-men again after seeing Deadpool & Wolverine and I've got this idea! Enjoy!
As you step into the office, a sinking feeling hits you like a ton of bricks. The atmosphere is different today, buzzing with an excitement you can't quite placeâuntil you look around. Every single person is in a costume. Pam at the reception, with her whiskers carefully drawn on and a headband with perky cat ears, looks up at you and offers a soft smile. Across the room, Kevin stands proudly in a superhero costume thatâs almost comically tight, and, unsurprisingly, Angela is also in a cat costume⌠and Phyllis too.
You freeze for a moment, dread creeping up your spine. Halloween. How could you forget?
You walk to the reception, greeting Pam. Then, like a scene from a horror movie, you catch sight of Dwight. Heâs sitting there, shrouded in a long black hooded robe, his eyes piercing you.
âYouâre lateâŚâ Dwight announces, his voice dripping with ominous intent, clearly trying to stay in character.
âYeah⌠there was crazy traffic down there,â you respond, scrambling for an excuse.
He inhales deeply, then lets out a dramatic sigh, clearly enjoying his role a little too much. âWhat are you supposed to be?â His tone suggests heâs already anticipating your failure.
Your mind races. You canât let him know you forgot it was Halloween. That would be handing him a victory in whatever unspoken battle the two of you are constantly fighting... sometimes three of you, when Jim joins.
You need to think of something fast. Something thatâll completely throw him off.
You got it.
Dwight opens his mouth to speak again, ready to announce your defeat. âI couldâveââ he starts.
You cut him off, smoothly drawing your index and middle finger up against your temple and squinting your eyes in concentration. ââthought soâŚâ you finish his sentence, trying to mimic the deep, contemplative voice of someone whoâs just accessed the hidden corners of their mind.
Dwightâs expression falters for a second, his usual expression of suspicion giving way to genuine shock.
âI am Professor X, Charles Xavier,âyou declare, trying to sound as confident as possible.
He snorts, immediately slipping back into his usual skepticism. âNo youâre not. Heâs bald.â
You roll your eyes. âJesus, just imagine him young!â
âHe was always bald, because of his mutation, dumbass,â Dwight snaps back, and you can tell heâs savoring this moment.
You lean in closer to Pam and whisper, âWhat a nerd.â
Pam stifles a laugh, as she watches you stroll to your desk, which, unfortunately, is directly across from Dwightâs.
âAnd you are?â you ask, gesturing to his dark, ominous ensemble.
âI am a Sith Lord,â he declares, his voice dripping with melodrama as he pulls back his hood slightly, revealing his intense, steely gaze.
You tilt your head and smirk. âOh really? I thought you were having an identity crisis. No offense.â
Dwight opens his mouth, ready to retaliate, but heâs suddenly distracted by the sight of Jim walking in through the door. Jim is wearing his usual attire, except for three black circles taped to his shirt.
Dwight is done. âAnd you are supposed to be?â
Jim glances down at his shirt, then back up at Dwight with a grin. âThree punch holes, Dwight. Normally Iâm just Jim. Today, Iâm three-punch-hole Jim.â
Dwight stares at him, annoyed that no one seems to take Halloween seriously here. âYouâre both so boring. Seriously, youâre made for each other,â he mutters, shaking his head as if the sheer absurdity of it all is too much for him to process.
Jim gives you a look, clearly remarking the last sentence Dwight said. You canât help but blush slightly. Suddenly Dwight storms off in disgust, robe billowing behind him like a dark, disgruntled shadow, making you, Jim and Pam laugh uncontrollably.
In this bizarre office, itâs the small victories that matter, and you and Jim know youâve just won this round without even trying.
Another authorâs note: I know Professor X as James McAvoy had hair in the films, but they only know the X-Men with Stewart + I read somewhere that in the comics he didnât have hair at all so Dwight may be right. :D

The Office - Communication Breakdown
INT. DUNDER MIFFLIN SCRANTON OFFICE - DAY
The usual hustle and bustle of the office fills the air as employees go about their work. The camera pans across the bullpen, capturing snippets of conversations and the clatter of keyboards.
Y/N'S DESK
Y/N is seated at her desk, working on some paperwork. Dwight approaches with a stern look on his face.
Dwight:Â [seriously]Â Y/N, I need you to tell Jim something for me.
Y/N:Â [looking up, amused]Â Sure, Dwight. What's up?
Dwight:Â [glancing around to make sure Jim isn't nearby]Â Tell him that his prank was amateur at best and that he will never best me in a battle of wits.
[Y/N chuckles and nods, turning to find Jim.]
Jim's Desk
[Jim is leaning back in his chair, fiddling with a paperclip. Y/N walks over and delivers Dwight's message.]
Y/N:Â [smiling]Â Jim, Dwight wants you to know that your prank was amateur at best and that you'll never best him in a battle of wits.
Jim:Â [grinning]Â Oh, really? Well, tell Dwight that his sense of humor is as outdated as his haircut.
[She laughs and walks back to Dwight.]
Dwight's Desk
[Dwight is busy organizing his desk meticulously. Y/N approaches and delivers Jim's message.]
Y/N:Â [trying not to laugh]Â Jim says your sense of humor is as outdated as your haircut.
Dwight:Â [fuming]Â Tell him that Iâm shunning him for the rest of the week, effective immediately.
Y/N:Â [sighing]Â Dwight, don't you think this is a bit much?
Dwight:Â [seriously]Â No. This is a necessary measure.
[Y/N returns to Jim's desk to relay the latest message.]
Jim:Â [smiling]Â Ah, shunning. Classic Dwight.
Interview - Dwight
Dwight:Â [looking serious]Â Shunning is an ancient Amish tradition. It's a way to show someone that their behavior is unacceptable. Jim needs to learn that pranks have consequences.
Interview - Jim
Jim:Â [grinning]Â Dwight shuns me about twice a month. It's kind of our thing. It's annoying, but also, it makes him easier to mess with.
Interview - Y/N
Y/N:Â [laughing]Â Being the middleman between Jim and Dwight is like being a referee in a game where only one person knows they're playing. It's exhausting, but it's also kind of hilarious.
INT. DUNDER MIFFLIN SCRANTON OFFICE - LATER
BREAK ROOM
[Y/N, Pam, and Jim are having lunch together. Dwight enters the room, looking determined.]
Pam: [whispering to Y/N]What's going on with Dwight today?
Y/N:Â [whispering back]Â He's shunning Jim. Again.
[Dwight clears his throat loudly, getting everyone's attention.]
Dwight:Â Y/N, tell Jim that he needs to stop leaving his dirty dishes in the sink.
Y/N:Â [sighing]Â Dwight, he's right here. You can tell him yourself.
Dwight:Â [stubbornly]Â No. I will not acknowledge his existence.
Jim:Â [smiling]Â Well, Y/N, tell Dwight that I will stop leaving my dishes in the sink when he stops labeling all his food in the fridge. No one wants his beet salad.
Y/N:Â [laughing]Â Okay, okay. How about we all just clean up after ourselves?
Pam:Â [amused]Â Yeah, that sounds like a good plan.
Dwight:Â [grudgingly]Â Fine.
Interview - Pam
Pam:Â [smiling]Â Watching Dwight shun Jim is like watching a soap opera. You can't help but get invested in the drama.
INT. DUNDER MIFFLIN SCRANTON OFFICE - AFTERNOON
BULLPEN
Y/N is at her desk when Michael approaches, looking confused.
Michael:Â Y/N, why is Dwight shunning Jim again?
Y/N:Â [smiling]Â Jim pranked him, and now Dwight's using his Amish shunning technique to teach him a lesson.
Michael:Â [nodding thoughtfully]Â Ah, classic Dwight. Well, keep up the good work. You're doing great as the office mediator.
Interview - Michael
Michael:Â [confidently]Â Y/N is like the glue that holds this office together. Without them, we'd be in chaos. More chaos than usual, I mean.
INT. DUNDER MIFFLIN SCRANTON OFFICE - LATER
CONFERENCE ROOM
Everyone is gathered for a meeting. Dwight and Jim are sitting on opposite sides of the table, with the reader between them.
Michael:Â [excitedly]Â Okay, team! Today we're going to brainstorm some new ideas for our sales strategy. Y/N, why don't you start us off?
Y/N:Â [clearing their throat]Â Sure. I was thinking we could focus on improving our customer service by...
[The camera cuts to Dwight, who leans over to Y/N and whispers something in her ear.]
Dwight:Â [whispering]Â Tell Jim that his idea for the new sales strategy is idiotic and will never work.
[Y/N rolls her eyes but obliges, whispering Dwight's message to Jim.]
Jim:Â [whispering back]Â Tell Dwight that his idea for the new sales strategy is so outdated that it belongs in a museum.
Y/N:Â [exasperated]Â Guys, can we focus on the meeting?
Interview - Dwight
Dwight:Â [seriously]Â Communicating through Y/N is actually quite efficient. It ensures that Jim understands the severity of his actions.
Interview - Jim
Jim:Â [laughing]Â Itâs like weâre in middle school. Dwight thinks heâs making a point, but really, it just gives me more opportunities to mess with him.
INT. DUNDER MIFFLIN SCRANTON OFFICE - AFTERNOON
BULLPEN
As the day continues, the shunning persists. Y/N is caught in the middle of increasingly absurd messages between Jim and Dwight.
Dwight:Â [smirking]Â Tell Jim that he should be prepared for a battle of wits tomorrow. I won't go easy on him.
Y/N:Â [sighing]Â Dwight, maybe you should just talk to him directly?
Dwight:Â [firmly]Â No. This is how it must be.
Jim:Â [grinning]Â Tell Dwight that I look forward to it. And that he should bring his A-game.
Y/N shakes her head, amused by the ongoing feud. As she turn back to het work, they catch a glimpse of Stanley watching the whole exchange with a bemused expression.
Interview - Stanley
Stanley:Â [chuckling]Â I stay out of their nonsense. But itâs always entertaining to watch. Y/N does a good job keeping the peace.
INT. DUNDER MIFFLIN SCRANTON OFFICE - LATE AFTERNOON
Y/N'S DESK
Y/N is working when Jim walks over, looking slightly sheepish.
Jim:Â [softly]Â Hey, sorry for dragging you into all this. I know itâs a lot.
Y/N:Â [smiling]Â It's okay. It keeps things interesting.
Jim:Â [smiling back]Â How about we get dinner tonight? My treat.
Y/N:Â [grinning]Â Sounds like a plan.
[As Jim walks away, Y/N catches Dwight watching them intently.]
Dwight:Â [seriously]Â Y/N, remember to relay my message about the battle of wits.
Y/N:Â [laughing]Â I will, Dwight. I will.
Interview - Y/N
Y/N:Â [laughing]Â It's exhausting, but I wouldn't have it any other way. This place is like a second home, and these people are like family. A very dysfunctional family.
INT. DUNDER MIFFLIN SCRANTON OFFICE - END OF DAY
As the day winds down, employees start packing up their things. Jim and Y/N walk out together, exchanging smiles and quiet conversation.
Pam:Â [smiling as she watches them leave]Â Those two are perfect for each other.
Michael:Â [beaming]Â Y/N and Jim make a great team. They're like the Romeo and Juliet of the office. But, you know, without the tragic ending.
[The camera captures Dwight watching Jim and Y/N with a mix of suspicion and grudging respect.]
Interview - Dwight
Dwight:Â [seriously]Â As much as it pains me to admit, Jim and Y/N are a formidable team. But that doesn't mean I won't crush him in our battle of wits.
Interview - Jim
Jim:Â [smiling]Â Dwight will never admit it, but he likes having Y/N around as much as the rest of us do. Even if he shows it in the weirdest way possible.
Interview - Y/N
Y/N:Â [smiling]Â At the end of the day, weâre all just trying to get through the workday with a little bit of fun. And if that means playing messenger between Jim and Dwight, so be it.

Ambivalent Days
Jim Halpert x Trans Man Reader (PART TWO) Can be read alone, but I do reference part one, so read that HERE if you want to be caught up!
Summary: Youâve finally come out as trans to the entire office. Itâs gone a lot better than expected. But now youâre faced with a serious problem- or rather, a serious crush. On none other than Jim Halpert, leading supporter of your transitions and quickly becoming your best friend in the office. But are you willing to risk that friendship just for some silly little feelings?
Tags: FtM!reader, Gay!Jim (for narrative reasons, I think i wanted him to be bi in the first part but switched it around, whatever), implied gay!reader (all i said was ânot straightâ), trans supporter Dwight, peacekeeper!Pam, supportive!Kelly Kapoor, bisexual!Kelly, drinking in moderation, happy ending Warnings: Michael being absolutely ridiculous and attention-hungry to the point that he does bad things (so, like, normal episode?), some general swearing
A/N: This has been requested so many times, both in asks and requests. Iâll try my best to tag everyone who asked for this, sorry if i forgot any! I was excited to write this because I loved the first part, but figuring out where to start was the trickiest part. I hope you all enjoy! (this entire fic ended up just writing itself once i got going. I had no clue what i was gonna do until it happened so⌠enjoy lol)
Life was great, working as a Customer Service representative for Dunder Mifflin paper company. Wow, you never thought youâd say such a thing, but it really has become something appealing, something that had you smiling and willing to come to work every single day. Of course, it had its own ups and downs, times when you felt overwhelmed or frustrated at certain people. You still ended up enjoying the majority of the day, and sometimes the rough days turned out to end up better than the rest.
It had absolutely, wholeheartedly nothing to do with James Duncan Halpert, otherwise known to his work colleagues as âJim.â You continued to lie to yourself, nodding along to this thought process on your drive to work. It was rainy, just like most days, and you were bored out of your mind waiting in the traffic. You just enjoyed going to work, because⌠Because of all of your friends, thatâs why! Sure, that might include Jim, but that also included Pam, and Oscar, and god forbid, even Dwight. Heâs certainly grown on you over time, having completely accepted your identity, even defending you against anyone who said anything. You couldnât be sure, but you suspected that Dwight had even lost a customer through those actions- but when Mr Dellicker had called for customer support and you had answered the phone, saying his name out loud, Kelly had rushed around the divider and ripped the phone from your hand, immediately transferring it to her own phone. You tried to listen in, curious why this was so important to her, but you kept hearing her say the same thing over and over.
âThank you for your consideration, but we no longer want your business with us. I completely understand that you think so, but we no longer want your business with us. While that may or may not be true, this whole conversation is futile considering we no longer want your business with us.â
Mr Dellicker had become a hushed topic around you, but you had managed to catch a private whisper among your friends one day when he was brought up again. Theyâd ask Kelly if he had called yet, and she assured the situation was handled. Pam had whispered, âI canât believe some peopleâs views on trans people. It makes no sense.â So, while it wasnât likely due to you specifically, you were almost sure that you were the only trans person they knew. If they were defending trans people, they were defending you alongside it all.
You pulled into the parking lot finally, shaking your head to rid yourself of those thoughts. Mr Dellickerâs whole deal had been a problem a month ago and was no longer an issue. You shouldnât dwell on those thoughts, you werenât likely to ever have to worry about it again. You managed to snag a semi-decent parking space. It was only the second from the front, but it happened to be right next to Michaelâs own car, and as you placed your car into park, you glanced over to notice he was still sitting there. You tilted your head in confusion, watching for a moment.
You couldnât tell if he was psyching himself up, or singing along to one of his weird songs. He seemed ready to open the door, then leaned back once more without actually doing it. He lowered the visor on his car, flipping open the little door to reveal his mirror and looking at himself in it. He continued, probably, speaking to himself, and you just shook your head and decided to leave it be. You reached for your suitcase and umbrella, then began making your way inside.
You were stuffing your umbrella into the little holder by the door after you entered the office, taking off your long overcoat and hanging it on the coat rack by Pamâs desk. She smiled, asking about what you did over the weekend, and you answered that you didnât really do much besides binge the next season of your current obsession. You agreed to tell her about it later, moving toward the break room for your normal cup of tea. You pat Jim on the shoulder on the way, and he reaches up quickly to touch your hand before you slip by. It causes a smile to cross your face as you continue on your path, a happy feeling welling up inside.
âI. Am a girl.â You spin around quickly, eyes widening in fright. There stood Michael Scott, wearing a short, pleated pink skirt with his normal yellow button-down dress shirt, as well as a crooked ginger wig that he had most definitely not been wearing in his car. The room falls completely quiet, and you hear two people put their calls on hold. Jim stands, and you canât see his face from this perspective, but you hear a hardness in his voice.
âMichael, this is not a funny joke-â
âItâs not a joke!â Michael yells out, crossing his arms. He purses his lips before speaking again in a higher tone. âIâm a girl, and so I decided to say it. That I am.â He looked around the room as if expecting something, but no one moved a muscle. Pam broke the silence, clearing her throat and talking in a tone that was both cautious and unbelieving.
âAlright, so what would you like us to call you, then?â Michael sputtered at the question, throwing his hands outward and looking around the room again. His eyes settle on me, and Jim sidesteps to block off his vision. You can no longer see Michael, but the image of him has burned into your mind anyway. You could feel yourself panicking, your heart trying to beat its way out of your chest. This had to be a prank right? He was making fun of you? Now? After all this time?
âWhat do you mean- Y/N didnât change his name when he came out!â
âThis has nothing to do with Y/N,â Jim quickly tries to interrupt him after hearing your name, but you heard his sentence all the same. Jim walked closer to Michael, leaning down to whisper, but even you could still hear his words in the silence your boss caused. âHow about we talk this out privately and continue this announcement later?â
âBut-â
âI think thatâs a fantastic idea, Jim,â Pam calls out quickly, circling her desk and corralling Michael into his office. He was putting up a fight, but not much of one. Jim followed closely behind, closing the door behind him. You could see multiple faces turn to look at you- as their current entertainment had been dragged away- out of the corner of your eye, but you were still there, shell-shocked. Before you realized what you were doing, you were standing directly outside Michaelâs office door, peeking around the side to look in through the window. You could hear them talking still, considering the rest of the office was waiting to see what you would do.
âNo, no, no!â Michael yelled out, plopping down into his seat. âIâm serious about this you guys!â
âAlright, letâs assume you are,â Pam begins, but Jim looks at her with an aggravated look.
âPam-â
âLetâs assume you are,â Pam repeats, pushing Jim away and leaning closer to Michael. âHow did you come to this decision?â
âI-â Michael hesitates, looking at his computer, then back to Pam. âWell, I really like girls a lot.â
âSure, sure, but sexuality and gender are different.â
âI know that, Pam! God!â Michael starts flipping random pens on his desk, trying to distract himself. âI just like their clothes a lot.â
âYou like to wear the clothes, or see them on women?â
âSee them-â He stops, looking up to her. âI mean, wear them! Yeah, thatâs what it is!â His stuttering and determination caused Jim to huff in a humourless laugh, no longer just standing by.
âWhatâs really going on here Michael?â
âAnd,â Michael begins, ignoring Jimâs question, âWhat was that question about what I wanted to be called? Y/N didnât change his name when he came out?â
âSure,â Pam agrees, trying to maintain the peace, âBut Michael isnât a very feminine name. Doesnât that make you feel a little, I donât know, dysphoric?â
âWhat does that word mean?â Michael asks, causing Jim to huff again, moving forward to slam his hands onto the table.
âWhat is really going on here, Michael?â
âFine!â Michael yelled out, throwing up his hands, his fake hair swinging around wildly. âI donât think Iâm a girl! I donât like wearing dresses or skirts or-â He spits, swatting away the fake hair that had managed to catch itself in his mouth, âAnd Iâm so uncomfortable in this,â He pulls the wig off finally, throwing it onto the ground. He stands next, reaching for the skirt he was wearing, âOr this-â
âNo, no, no!â Pam calls out quickly, keeping him from ripping the skirt off in front of them. âIâll fetch you your spare pair of pants here soon, itâs at the desk. Just,â She sighs, shaking her head, âWhat couldâve possibly made you think this was a good idea, Michael?â
âWell!â Michael huffs, pouting as he sits back down. âY/N got all sorts of attention when he came out. He became cool, and popular, and now Iâm not even allowed to make jokes about him! Everyone hates me now, he took my thunder!â
âYou can still make jokes about him,â Pam continues cautiously, raising her hands up in a plea to calm him down. âJust, not about the fact that heâs trans.â
âMy thunder Pam!â
âThis is fucking ridiculous,â Jim begins, reaching forward and grabbing hold of Michaelâs shirt. âThat stunt you pulled was mean-spirited and heinous. Do you have any idea how you couldâve made Y/N feel? How hard it was for him, not only to accept himself for who he is but to become confident enough in himself to come out to the entire office? Do you realize how much you probably just put him back?â Michaelâs face was terrified, and Pam was too stunned at this action to do anything at first. By the time Jim was done talking, she reached forward quickly and pulled him back.
âJim, thatâs unnecessary.â
âI feel it was completely necessary, Pam.â
âHe doesnât realize what heâs doing, he just wants attention.â
âHe gets attention every single day Pam! He demands it, hell, he goes out into the office and-â
âJim,â Pam interrupts, nodding toward Michael. You watch Michael visibly sniff, raising a hand to rub at his nose.
âNo, no, heâs right. Iâm a nuisance, everyone hates me.â
âNo one hates you, Michael,â Pam starts, and Jim scoffs.
âYouâre babying him.â She shoots him a threatening look, and he just shakes his head and crosses his arms. Pam moves closer to the desk, looking down at Michael.
âHey,â When Michael looks up, his eyes are red and glossy. âWhat you did just now, was that a good idea?â
âNo,â He whines out, drawing out the vowel.
âGood, thatâs the correct answer. And why was it a bad idea, Michael?â He huffs again, moving to play with a different toy on his desk and avoiding her eyes.
âBecause I lied for attention.â
âAnd?â
âBecause I probably made Y/N feel bad. And Jim.â
âSo what are you going to do?â Pam asks, and you canât see her expression but Michael finally meets her eyes and breathes in a deep breath.
âIâm going to tell everyone that it was a horrible prank and that Iâm sorry.â
Even Jim startles at this, both Pam and Jim- even you, yourself- having never actually heard Michael apologize for one of his many failed pranks or skits. Pam straightens up, glancing quickly at Jim before looking back. Her voice was full of surprise as she nods, âThatâs right. Thatâs completely right, actually. Good job Michael.â You could see him smile before looking down at his lap, then back up at Pam.
âCan I do it after I change?â
âOf course,â Pam moves quickly to the door, and you donât think fast enough to move out of the way. The door swings open wide and you are revealed to be standing there, right outside of it. All three occupants turn to look at you with varying expressions, but they all share a similar surprise. You swallow hard, locking your eyes with Michael. You are about to speak but can feel eyes digging into your back, so you take a few steps into the office, past your two friends.
âWhat you did just now,â You begin, sucking in another deep breath, âWas horrifying- for everyone involved. Iâm sure we want to see you in a skirt just as much as you want to be in one.â You lean forward onto the desk, watching Michael shrink away from you. âBut let me ask you, how does it feel to wear that skirt?â
âWhat?â He looks startled at the question, looking to Jim and Pam for help. None arrived for him.
âHow does it feel, wearing that skirt? Why arenât you wearing a blouse with it? Couldnât find one that fit, or did it feel too uncomfortable? What about the hair?â You nod down to wear the wig laid on the ground. âWas it annoying? Kept getting caught in your mouth, right? Drooped in front of your face, obscuring your vision?â You leaned forward, your breath coming out harsher. âImagine you had breasts attached to you- and push past your sexuality. Imagine you had them and they couldnât be removed.â You whisper this last part, your own eyes tearing up. âHow would you feel?â
You hear Jim say your name softly behind you, realizing what you were referencing. Michael shook his head for a few seconds before he stopped, widening his eyes. You nod, continuing your speech. âYeah, exactly.â You lean back, picking your hands off of his desk to rest by your side. âThatâs how I feel every single day. Or, did. Until I came out.â You take a deep breath, steadying yourself. âI became confident because I was finally comfortable with who I was. Iâm sorry if you canât find that confidence in yourself. But donât try to steal mine. Donât make a mockery of my struggles.â You turn, heading toward the door, toward your desk- to anywhere but here. But Michaelâs voice stops you before youâre able to leave.
âIâm sorry, Y/N.â You turn, looking into his eyes. He seemed genuine, but you knew he didnât really understand.
âThink about why you are. Then get back to me.â
You pushed your way past Pam, who stood in the doorway with shock and pain written across her face, and ignored Jimâs call of your name as you kept going. You wanted away from these stares, this was not what you meant by loving this damned office. You continued past the breakroom, ignoring your daily cup of tea. You enter into your side of the annexe, seeing Kelly on the phone and hearing a whispered but high-pitched, âWhat? No! He didnât?â Before she suddenly looks up, widens her eyes, and quickly says, âGotta go,â Before slamming the phone down. You sigh and walk around the divider, taking your seat.
Kelly has more social sense than most people in the office, youâve come to realize. It was why she had applied for customer service- unlike you, who had just taken up an ad from the newspaper. So, she knew better than to try to ask you what happened. She remained quiet on her side of the partition, something that was extremely odd, and it almost felt like you were in your own little world, in your tiny corner. Your desk was pressed against two walls, and the partition blocked the other two sides except for the small gap for your entrance. The partition walls werenât very high, but sitting down they reached above your head. You felt isolated- something you first loved, then hated, and now feel grateful for once again. It gives you time and privacy to calm down.
After some time, you hear a throat clear nearby, and Kellyâs chair roll as she likely stands to leave. You look up at the top of your divider, waiting for a face to come into view. Luckily, itâs Jimâs face. He smiles softly at you, and you can tell heâs trying to keep the pity from his face, but it's not working very well.
âYou didnât make your tea?â He raises a cup- your favourite cup, no less, that no one else has used since your incident with Dwight- and offers it to you. âI figured Iâd make you some. Canât go a day without your tea, right?â You can tell he was trying, and it warmed something inside of you. Trying for a smile, you reach out to take the cup, taking a sip. It was made perfectly.
âIâm sorry about that,â You begin, sighing and placing the cup aside. âI kinda went a little overboard, didnât I?â
âNot at all,â Jim rushes to comfort you, circling the divider completely to be inside your little cube. He rests himself against your desk, looking down at you with earnest eyes. âIf anyone was overboard, it was Michael.â You just shrug, looking away.
âI mean, what did I expect, really? Everyone in the office has been so good about the whole thing. Ever since Iâve come out, it's been nothing but positivity.â You bite your lip, shrugging. âThis office isnât exactly a positivity-friendly environment.â
âYou being trans should have no bearing on your workplace,â Jim insists, leaning forward toward you. âI know the world is fucked, but I want to make sure that at least your world isnât.â You huff a laugh, shaking your head.
âOh, câmon Jim. Donât be too hard on yourself.â You look up, meeting his eyes with a self-deprecating smile. âItâs not like it's because of you that all of this ended up so easy until now.â Jimâs eyes widen slightly, then wander away as he wiggles his head and bites his lip. You wait for him to agree, then narrow your eyes. âYou⌠Didnât tell everyone to be nice to me, did you?â
âWell,â He begins, drawing out the word and wincing. âI didnât quite do that. But I did explain that they shouldnât act any different, what jokes they shouldnât make about it, and to look something up before asking any questions. If they couldnât find the answer online, then they could ask me, and then I would allow them to ask you.â You blink a few times, tilting your head.
âBut no one ever asked me anything?â He nodded along, sucking his lips inside his mouth before popping them, sighing.
âYep.â
âDid they have questions?â
âOh,â Jim scoffs, laughing. âSo many.â He places his hands between his knees, palms together. You couldnât help but laugh with him.
âLike what?â You feel curious but also dread at the prospect.
âOh, yâknow,â Jim shrugs, moving to mess with some pens on your desk idly, not meeting your eyes. âJust the usual dumbest shit on the planet. I told them all they were absolutely not allowed to ask you, of course, and had to explain why sometimes.â You nodded along, huffing out another laugh.
âI suddenly donât want to know.â
âOh, no, you really donât.â You laugh softly along with him, feeling your chest bloom open, your crush developing further. For the second time today, you were moving before realizing you decided to. You stood, then reached forward and pulled Jim into a hug. He had straightened when he noticed you standing, then stood stiff as you wrapped your arms around his shoulders. You hesitated, about to pull away when Jim moved quickly, wrapping you in his arms and pulling you in tighter. You relaxed once more, laying your head against his chest and closing your eyes.
âThank you, Jim,â You whisper, turning your nose to brush against his dress shirt. He smelled clean, with a hint of cologne that you couldnât place. His arms were warm and strong- comforting in a way that you hadnât felt in so long. He moved one of them up, cupping the back of your head as he straightened up more, pulling you in closer.
âItâs nothing,â Jim stutters out, and you can hear his heart beating under your ear. âSomeoneâs gotta make sure these folks donât chase you away.â You laugh, leaning back to look him in the eye. He seems sincere, solemn, as he adds, âI think I would be devastated if you quit.â You chuckle once more, shaking your head as you pull away.
âOh, Iâm sure.â
âNo,â Jim lowers his head, trying to catch your eye once again. âIâm completely serious. You are probably the only reason I still show up.â He laughs, shaking his head. âI mean, Iâm this old and stuck in this job?â You laugh along, shaking your head.
âYou make good money here, Halpert, donât deny it.â You feel slightly upset you had pulled away from the hug so soon, but you had to look at him after he said that. You had to see if he was serious- Jim is hardly ever serious, always joking around. It was part of the reason your crush developed so fast, and also why itâd always remain a secret. He was so funny, making you laugh constantly. But he was also a bit of a jokester, and you didnât know if he had a serious bone in his body. Today was showing he certainly did.
You werenât sure if youâd be able to handle it.
You both spend some more time chatting, and his presence is a balm that soothes your panicked heart. He tries his best to make you laugh- which you do, often- and you finish your morning cup of tea in the meantime. You were sure you couldâve talked to him forever if only your phone hadnât rung. You shrug with helplessness, reminded that youâre technically at work and still have a job to do. You reach to pick up your phone, apologizing to Jim who waves you off. You watch him walk away as you answer the phone, âDunder Mifflin paper company, customer service representative speaking.â
It ended up being a quick call, with someone complaining that their shipment was late. You only had to find their account to let them know that the delivery was scheduled for today and the time. Once you placed the phone back in its slot, you raised your cup to your mouth before remembering it was empty. âEh, might as well,â You think to yourself, pushing to stand and make your way to the breakroom. Kelly is back at her desk as you circle around, and you make sure to say a soft greeting to her to make up for your earlier rudeness. She says a polite and short greeting back with a gentle face, still conscious of your rough morning.
Youâre about to pull the door to the breakroom open when you notice the back of Jim standing at the counter. He was hefting a freshly brewed pot of coffee, and you couldnât help but stand there and watch his arm flex as he hefted it with no problem. You didnât see the other door open, but suddenly Kevin was walking directly into Jimâs space.
âI have another question.â Jim sighs visibly, shaking his head.
âHavenât I told you enough-â
âNo, this is a different question, Jim!â Kevin seems adamant, and after Jim puts the coffee pot away he takes a side step to regain some personal space. âAnd you said yesterday thereâs a limit of stupid questions Iâm allowed to ask a day so I couldnât ask yesterday!â
âYou have until I finish making my coffee.â Youâve never seen Jim quite so indifferent and snappy before, raising your curiosity. For some reason, you still stood there, barely peeking through the window of the door, still holding your empty cup.
âOk, so if he still wanted breasts-â
âNope.â Jim was already shaking his head, stirring sugar into his coffee.
âAlright fine, but also. Can he sow a penis-â
âNope.â Kevin huffs in frustration, flapping his arms for a split second.
âWhy do you keep saying no to all of my questions?â Jim finishes stirring his coffee, placing the spoon in the sink and turning to look directly at Kevin finally.
âBecause all of these questions are way too personal.â
âHow are they personal?â You tilt your head, furrowing your brow. How would they not be personal? Jim seems frustrated, running his free hand through his hair.
âYou canât just ask someone about their breasts or genitals, Kevin. You wouldnât want anyone asking about your dick.â
âActually, itâs kinda itchy-â
âNope!â Jim pushes away from the bar, leaving immediately. Youâre stuck between sympathy for both of them. You donât think Kevin actually knows any better at this point, but you also just felt too awkward to even try to come up with an answer to those questions. However, were these the types of things that Jim had to put up with daily just to vet the office for you? Why would he put himself through all of that?
âHeâs really trying, you know?â You startle from your thoughts, turning to look at Kelly still sitting in her rolling chair. You tilt your head in confusion, but also shifted on your feet, hoping to play off the fact that youâd been standing there this whole time.
âWho?â Kelly just gives you a look you canât quite decipher, continuing.
âJim, obviously.â She sighs, pushing herself away from her desk and standing. âHeâs even asked me for help on occasion. Little things here and there, but he recruits the allies where he can find them.â You purse your lips, leaning back against the wall next to the door, crossing your arms while holding your cup upright still.
âAsked you for help? Doing what? Who else has he asked?â
âI knew youâd figure it out at some point, I just didnât think itâd be when someone slipped through his fingers. Though, Michael is pretty unpredictable like that.â She shrugs with a smile like sheâs trying to hold back a laugh. âHis main ask for me was just to intercept anyone trying to bother you- most likely to ask the dumb questions. I just had to send them right back through the breakroom over to Jimâs desk.â
âDid that happen often?â She shrugs again, wiggling her head.
âNot often, but a few times. Mainly Kevin, he has a lot of questions.â You nod, glancing briefly toward the breakroomâs door before resting your eyes on her once more. You study her posture, then try to make a guess.
âThe other was Mr Dellicker, wasnât it?â She winces but nods nonetheless.
âHe was a real ass.â She sighs dramatically, moving to lean against the wall next to you and bunching up one of the random, typical office posters that hang around throughout the floor. âHe was Dwightâs client, actually. The moment Dwight heard him be even a small bit transphobic, he hung up the phone. This, of course, caught Jimâs attention. I mean, have you ever known Dwight to drop a client? Like, ever?â You shake your head in agreement, and she nods with you. âYeah, right? Anyway, Jim asks, Dwight answered. To Dwight, that was the end of the entire thing. To Jim, however,â Her smile begins growing as she leans closer to you, âWell, he knew that Mr Dellicker would call back to complain. And who would be picking up the phone?â
âCustomer service,â You mumble, absorbed into her story.
âExactly!â She giggles now, unable to hold it back. âIt was adorable, really, the way he begged me to make sure I took his call. He actually asked me to call the man first, but I told Jim I wouldnât go out of my way just to aggravate someone who, as far as we knew, wouldnât be calling back after such a rude hang-up. But he wouldnât let up, so I agreed to keep an ear out.â She huffs now, widening her eyes with a far-off look. âGood thing I did, too. He was such an ass.â
âThank you,â You say softly, bringing her back to the present. She tries to brush it off but you just shake your head, placing a hand on her arm. âNo, not just for Mr Dellicker. For agreeing to help out at any point, just for me. For not making a big deal about my whole coming out, for never treating me any different or- just-â You hesitate, shaking your head. âJust everything, Kelly. Youâre an amazing coworker.â You watch her eyes begin to water, and she lets out a wet laugh.
âWow,â She raises her hands, wiping the corners of her eyes. âYouâre going to make my makeup run.â She pushes up from the wall, circling you and entering into the breakroom, heading straight for the girlsâ bathroom. You widen your eyes at this reaction, unsure, but take a deep breath and enter into the breakroom yourself. You still had some tea to brew.
You didnât mean to idle, standing near the exit of the breakroom toward the annexe, but stuck in place watching Jim lean against Pamâs desk through the doorâs window on the other side of the room. They were talking back and forth- a lot of laughing involved- and you couldnât quite place the feelings whirling in your chest. It felt similar to jealousy, but you knew that wasnât it. Envy? That perhaps she was his type, and not you after your transition? Insecurity?
You startle as Jim suddenly meets your eyes, watching him straighten up quickly. You try to act nonchalant, moving out of his line of sight to grab your lunch from the fridge, and sitting at the break room table. Youâd finished your second cup of tea hours ago, and you were a tad overdue for your lunch break considering you had a whole host of emails that you usually respond to in the morning, but had to answer during your second cup of tea since youâd been just a tad distracted that morning. You bite your lip as the events from that morning fly through your mind, a whole host of emotions attached to them.
The door across the room opens, stopping your train of thought in its tracks. Jim walks in with a smile, moving toward the fridge. âHey,â He greets you, scanning you with his eyes while you just sat there, slowly removing your lunch from its brown paper bag. âWas starting to worry youâd forgo lunch.â You laugh, then proceed to explain your lateness. As he sets his own lunch on the table, you begin to wonder if he waited for you. Then your eyes flicker back toward the door youâd been staring at him through.
âSo, howâs Pam?â Jim seems a bit taken off guard at the question, turning to look at the door himself before looking back to you. He shrugs, taking his own lunch out of his lunch box.
âUh, good, I guess?â He raises his sandwich, ready to take a bite before hesitating and adding on, âSheâs excited to hear about that one show you mentioned this morning.â You nod along, watching as he begins to eat his sandwich. You take your own small bite, looking toward the door again.
âSheâs cute, isnât she?â Jimâs eyebrows furrow immediately, and you watch him swallow. He seems to be planning his actions in his head before he performs them, placing his sandwich down.
âWhat?â He looks around the room aimlessly, wiggling his head. âI mean, yeah of course. Sheâs cute.â
âYou two get along really well.â At this he chuckles, shrugging.
âWeâve worked together for a long time.â You both fall silent, taking more bites of your food. Jim breaks the silence with a resounding, âIâd probably have developed a crush on her by now if I wasnât gay.â
Gay.
You end up lightly choking on your bite from surprise, playing it off with a cough and a sip of your water bottle. You can see Jim staring down at his sandwich at the table, taking a deep breath. âSo, I can see why someone would develop a crush on her. If he was straight.â He glances briefly up at you, then back down to his sandwich. You tried your damndest to keep the look of shock from your face, that it takes an extra minute before you understand what heâs not saying. Did he think you were asking because you had a crush on Pam? You take another sip of water, letting your eyes wander away from him.
âYeah, same.â Out of the corner of your eye, Jim glances up at you quickly, a look of concentration on his face that indicates his thoughts roaming a million miles an hour. You shrug for show, moving your own food closer so you can take a bite once you finish speaking. âIâd probably have developed a crush as well if I was straight.â
You only recognized the signs of Jim choking since youâd just gone through the same thing, as the man turns to cough into his arm as if to play it off. At least the poor man hadnât been chewing food like you were. By the time Jim finished drinking from his own bottle, and moved to lean forward and say something, he was interrupted by the door opening and someone entering inside. He leans back, looking self-conscious, and you feel such a deep curiosity about what he was going to say that it burns in your chest. You donât even register who walked in until she was taking a seat right next to you.
âI donât know how you can stand it, Jim,â Kelly begins softly, and you look at her with confusion. Kelly never talks softly? âWorking right next to the receptionist's desk all day. How do you get any work done?â Jimâs eyes flicker between you and Kelly, clearing his throat.
âWhat do you mean?â
âWell, sheâs so hot!â You and Jim meet eyes suddenly, listening to her continue to talk in a soft voice. No wonder, considering she was essentially coming out to the both of you. âWhen I first started and had to work over in that area, I was getting nothing done. Toby had to ask me what was wrong, and I sorta kinda told the truth that I was extremely distracted. He moved me to the annexe-â She pauses here, resting a hand on your arm with a sympathetic expression, âSorry, Y/N, thatâs why youâre confined back here as well.â You shake your head quickly, rushing in.
âNo, itâs fine. I like it back here.â
âYou do?â Jim asks with a smirk, and you give him a look essentially saying âShut the fuck up Halpert Iâm trying to console her.â He just laughs noiselessly, his chest shaking as he moves to take another gigantic bite of his sandwich.
âAnyway, itâs so distracting. I had to go get something copied and I stood there an extra five minutes trying not to stare too directly at her. Oscar literally had to nudge me and remind me what I was doing!â She groans, letting her head fall onto the table. âSo embarrassing.â
âOscar knows?â You ask gently, unsure whether she actually realized she told you both. She lifts her head with a sigh, seemingly unfazed.
âWell, yeah. Oscar knows about everyone.â You hear Jim scoff softly, mumbling quietly under his breath.
âNot everyone.â This only causes Kelly to raise an eyebrow at Jim, smirking with humour.
âOh, he knows about everyone, Jim.â His head was quick as it whipped toward Kelly, leaning in.
âWait, what?â
âI mean,â She shrugs, glancing toward you briefly before meeting his eyes again. âYouâre kinda obvious, Jim.â You can see his eyes widen, but you only feel confusion.
âWait, how many people are gay in this office?â Kelly only shrugs, refusing to meet your eyes.
âNot my place to say.â You nodded along, obviously that being true. You meet Jimâs eyes once again, and you can see red peppering his cheeks.
âIâm sure itâs fine, Jim.â He nods as if agreeing, flicking his eyes between you and the rest of his sandwich throughout the rest of lunch. Kelly takes the initiative in the ensuing silence, talking about everything yet nothing at the same time. Just as you and Jim are both cleaning up to get back to work, Kelly sighs loudly with an eyeroll before looking toward you and plastering on a smile. The look only made you feel wary.
âSo, Y/N, what are your plans for after work?â You swallow roughly, glancing at a wide-eyed Jim, then back to her.
âUh, nothing really?â
âOh,â She draws out, reaching forward and placing a flirty hand on your arm. âSo youâre free tonight? Want to go out for drinks?â You stutter, pulling away from her arm, your head already shaking as you try to come up with an excuse. âDidnât she just say that she found Pam attractive? What the hell is going on?â
âUh, Kelly-â Jim tries to intercept, but she pulls away as if nothing happened, shrugging.
âI just meant with the lot of us. Jim will be there too, wonât you Jim?â She looks directly at him, raising her eyebrows as if she was expecting something from him. You look between the two as an awkward silence settles before Jim startles, trying (and failing) for a normal smile.
âOh! Those drinks!â Jim laughs awkwardly, looking back and meeting your eyes. âYeah, weâre all going out for happy hour at Poor Richardâs Pub, you should join us!â You relax slightly as Jim was the one offering, no matter how weird this entire interaction ended up being.
âOh, uh,â You hesitate, still slightly wary. Thereâs obviously something youâre missing here. âI mean, sure. I have nothing else to do. Who all will be there?â
âJust a couple people from the office,â Kelly quickly answers, standing and moving to throw her own trash away. She turns to look at both you and Jim, still sitting in your chairs. âWell, câmon! We have work to do, people!â
âI know why Iâm sorry now.â You startle at your desk, turning to look directly at Michael Scott with wide eyes. You hadnât even heard him approach. He circles around your desk, motioning for you to stop your work as he leans against your desk- an unknowing imitation of Jim that morning. âIf youâre willing to listen?â
You can feel yourself swallow roughly, the beginnings of a familiar panic starting in your chest. Youâre unsure what to say, so you just nod. He nods as well, taking a deep breath before continuing. âAt first, I had no clue what you meant. I knew I was sorry, and I knew it was because I had hurt you.â He looks into your eyes, regret deep within his own. âBut that wasnât enough for you. So I started thinking.â He chuckles softly, leaning back on his hands and letting his own gaze roam the walls behind your desk. âAnd when that didnât work, I remembered something Pam said when she tried to play along with my- well, yeah. A certain word I didnât recognize. Dysphoric.â
You feel yourself tense, suddenly remembering the tightness around your chest where the binder lays under your clothes. You can feel the tie around your neck like it was trying to choke you. Michael, unaware of your inner struggles, continues on. âThat search was enlightening- it was like everything you had expressed to me. And everything I had felt, trying on those clothes.â He hunches inward, his expression becoming stormy. âI felt so wrong wearing that skirt. And you were right- I had tried a blouse on. I bought one at the store that fit and even brought it home, but it just felt so weird when I tried to walk out of the door with it on. So I switched to my normal shirt.
âThen I was sitting in the parking lot, and I knew that the moment I placed my foot out of my car, everyone would see the skirt. I was-â He laughs humourlessly, shaking his head. âI was terrified. I tried to ignore it- like it was just stage fright, something I had to talk myself into.â You began to nod, intrigued by his story. âI donât know how I convinced myself to get out of the car- I guess something along the lines of, âWell, Iâm the boss. The ship will sink without me in there.ââ He takes a deep breath, patting his legs loudly. âAnyway, I was jealous.â He shrugs, looking at you with wet eyes. Was he really getting emotional over this? âI mean, you did kinda steal my birthday away from me.â
Memories of that night flash quickly through your head. Youâd come out during a party- a party you didnât know the purpose of. That pink quinceaĂąera cake⌠You didnât get to taste it, but they couldâve gotten it because it was his favourite flavour? You hadnât even seen Michael there. Was he trying for a grand entrance? Memories from this morning flash through your mindâs eye, Michael yelling at Pam, âHe stole my thunder! My thunder, Pam!â
âIt wasnât planned, Michael,â You try to assuage, wincing despite yourself. âIâm sorry, though.â Your apology causes Michael to blow a sigh out roughly, then laugh and slap his thighs again.
âWow! I didnât know how much I needed to hear that.â Youâre both silent- you studying Michaelâs face, and Michael looking anywhere but at you. Then you start laughing.
âMichael,â You try to talk through your laughter, but you just shake your head and try to get it under control. You wouldnât want him to think you were making fun of him- you only found him ridiculous- so you try your best to calm down. âMichael. You were upset that I âstole your thunderâ on your birthday, so your response was to⌠Pretend to be a girl? Instead of, oh I donât know,â You try to hold back your laughter again, choking lightly on your words, âThrowing another party?â Michael seems to take a moment to absorb this- then begins to laugh alongside you.
âWell, that wouldâve only been easy, Y/N. When have you known me to do things the easy way?â You both laughed again, and you began to shake your head.
âNever.â When your laughter finally dies down, you meet his eyes once again. Staring at each other, it's like you both finally understood. You thought he was just ignorant, but you had been missing out on important information as well. He began to nod, glancing over his shoulder toward the nearby wall clock.
âWell, looks like I kept you long enough. Time to clock on out!â He jumps up, shooting finger guns before backing up. He trips over the edge of the divider, tries to play it off, and then groans loudly when he sees Toby walking by. âGod, every time!â
You chuckle to yourself, then begin the process of shutting down your computer and packing up. Kelly skirts around the divider quickly once the door closes behind Michael, leaning into your space. âLet me drive you.â You hesitate, widening your eyes.
âIâm sorry?â
âTo the pub! Let me drive you!â You laugh nervously, beginning to shake your head.
âOh, uh, no. I have my own car, but thank you-â
âIf you drink, you wonât be able to drive home.â She counters, raising her eyebrows at you. You laugh again, shaking your head.
âWell, if weâre all drinking, wouldnât you drink too?â She shakes her head immediately, crossing her arms.
âI donât drink at all.â You still feel hesitant, and it must show on your face as she sighs and then leans in. âIâll tell you Jimâs whole deal.â This catches you, looking back at her to study her.
âWhat do you meanâŚ?â
âIâll tell you if you let me drive you!â You huff a laugh, smiling despite yourself. âYeah, alright. But if I donât drink, you gottaâ take me back here so I can drive myself home.â
âDeal! And if you do, then Iâll drive you home and pick you up for work tomorrow morning!â You laugh again, shaking your head as you pick your briefcase up, finished with closing down your desk for the day.
âYou seem excited about this.â
âAbsolutely! Iâve been waiting forever!â
You were still unsure what she meant but followed along with the hyperactive girl as she burst through both of the doors to the breakroom. You watch Jim straighten where he had been leaning against Pamâs receptionist's desk, and smile toward you as you made your way to the exit.
âYou know,â Jim starts, huffing a soft laugh and smiling in a way that took your breath away, âI was thinking.â
âOh,â You draw out, smiling despite yourself, âDangerous territory there, Halpert.â
âYeah, yeah,â Jim begins, laughing again. He takes a discreet look around before reaching forward to almost take your hand, his fingers tangling with your own but not quite grasping. âI was hoping that maybe I could drive you down to the pub? I know you have your own car and all, but I just want to make sure youâre safe with getting home, yâknow?â Your face falls just as you hear Kellyâs voice behind you.
âOh, donât worry Jim! He has a ride already.â Jim looks toward Kelly over your shoulder, then back to you with wide eyes, pulling his hand away.
âAlready?â Jim looks back to Kelly, confusion clear across his face.
âOh, donât get your panties in a twist, Jim!â You feel her small hand wrap around your bicep, pulling you toward the door. âWeâll meet you there!â
You take one last look at Jim through the glass doors as Kelly drags you along to the elevator. You hesitate, mind trying to catch up, before you finally clear your throat and look at her. âNo offence here, Kelly, but I honestly think I wouldâve preferred riding with Jim?â
âYouâll have the rest of your life to ride with Jim. Just let me tell you what I need to tell you without the risk of Jim hearing us.â You both step onto the elevator, as Kelly begins mashing the button for the lobby.
âUh,â Your mind is stuck, repeating ârest of your lifeâ and âJimâ over and over. âThis feels⌠Is this nefarious?â
ââNefarious,ââ Kelly mocks, pulling you once the doors open again. âYou say the oddest things sometimes.â You didnât know which car was hers, but considering she was dragging you along, you didnât have to guess. She pulls your briefcase from your hands, finally letting go of you, and you just stand in place. She throws your suitcase and her purse into the backseat, then opens the driver's door with a look up at you. âWell, get in!â
It was quiet for a long portion of the drive. You didnât know what to ask, or how to even broach the subject. Did it seem too eager, to ride along with her just because she promised to tell you about Jim? And what was she even talking about- how would Kelly know more about Jim than you? True, you both hadnât been friends for very long just yet, but you didnât know Kelly and Jim were friends?
âSo, it started when you started transitioning,â Kelly said, bursting you from your whirlwind of questions. âWe all got pretty curious. I was the one who had the theory you were trans first.â She winces, looking over to you. âSorry. I didnât know at the time how true I was. I honestly didnât even know if you knew about it, but- well, obviously you did.â You tilt your head, brow furrowing.
âYou all were talking about me before we were friends?â
âWell, you know how the office is. You were changing, and people were noticing. Especially Pam and Jim. Pam, who is such a sweetheart and just wants everyone to be comfortable. She had a feeling you were never quite comfortable at the office but didnât know how to help. Jim found you hot, which was throwing him for a loop considering he is gay, and normally not attracted to-â She hesitates, tilting her head. âWell, we did think you were a girl at the time.â
You nod along, unoffended. âRight, but-â You scoff, shaking your head, âI donât know if I believe this story now. I mean, Jim? Finding me-â You almost say the word, then scoff softly and look down to your lap. âAttractive?â
âWell, you are hot,â Kelly confirms, and you look up quickly at her. You arenât sure what expression is on your face, but Kelly just laughs. âWhat? Donât look at me like that! You were hot when we all thought that you were a girl, and youâre even hotter now that we know youâre a boy!â You laugh in disbelief, shaking your head. Kelly continues on, pushing through your awkwardness. âI mean, câmon! Confidence is sexy as hell.â
You look away, feeling a blush rise to your cheeks as you remember Jim saying something similar. âSure, but-â Kelly interrupts you, continuing with her story.
âSo once you finally came out, Jim had his own little freak-out because it wasnât just a theory anymore. It is true, you are a dude, and Jim didnât know if he could handle you getting hotter and hotter every day.â You flashback to another scene in your head, Jim saying something similar to Pam and you laughing, accusing him of finding Dwight attractive. Was he talking about you at that time? Kellyâs voice brings you back.
âAnyway, I finally told him that he needed to get his act together and ask you out already, or Iâd do it first. Either ask you out for myself or for him, but either way. I donât know if I could stand any more of him spewing about you, I mean- all I heard was Y/N this, or Y/N that, or âWow heâs wearing the tie I gifted him!â I mean, that man can talk.â You hold back a laugh, shaking your head. The one and only Kelly Kapoor, complaining about someone talking too much. Thatâd be hilarious to tell Jim- if you ever got the nerve together to tell him about this little conversation.
âOk,â You huff out, shaking your head, âYouâre asking me to believe that Jim not only finds me attractive but wants to date me?â
âWell, thatâs where weâre going now! So you better believe it.â
âGoing now- but youâre here? The office will be there, how would it be a date?â
âItâs going to be a date,â Kelly starts slowly, looking at you with a grin, âBecause itâs not an office hangout. Iâm going to drop you off and leave, and then Jim can take you home. I only did this to get you both together outside of work, youâll be all alone with him.â She huffs, squeezing the steering wheel around her hands. âAnd Iâm telling you all of this before the date because I donât trust Jim to admit anything to you without pushing him for it. If Iâm not there to pressure him, then-â
âWoah woah woah,â You interrupt, shaking your head quickly. âIâm not about to pressure my best friend for- for some wild hope that he might feel the same. And I-â You can feel the panic again, pulling at the seatbelt around your torso. âI donât know if I can do this, I didnât know it would be just us, I mean-â
âCalm down, itâll be fine. Itâs just Jim, remember?â âItâs just Jim,â You repeat to yourself as Kelly turns the car into the pubâs parking lot. You take a few deep breaths, nodding your head. âYeah, I can do this. Itâs just Jim, just normal ole Jim.â Kelly backs her car into a space, waiting for Jimâs to arrive. It doesnât take long to notice Jimâs car pulling in, parking in one of the front parking spaces, directly in your line of sight. You take another deep breath, nodding.
âI can do this,â You whisper, and Kelly reaches over to squeeze your arm. Thatâs when you watch two of the car doors open, Jim and Pam stepping out to take a look around. You hear a squeak beside you, Kellyâs hand tightening on your arm. You look over with concern, watching panic written across her face.
âOh, Jim, you bitch,â Kelly whispers, shaking her head.
âThis wasnât part of the plan, was it?â
âAbsolutely not,â Kelly whispers, then moves to get out of the car alongside you. You both approach the other two, smiles on your faces. They finally notice you, and itâs almost like you and Jim have locked eyes and thrown away the key. Youâre unsure whatâs really happening between the two girls, not registering the words exchanged. You walk a little closer to Jim, smiling up at him.
âHey,â You whisper, and his smile widens, reaching his hand out in an imitation of earlier, tangling your fingers together.
âHey.â He glances over to the other two girls, wincing and looking back to you. âI wasnât sure- is it okay that I brought Pam?â
âApparently,â You whisper, leaning closer and glancing briefly at Kelly to make sure sheâs sufficiently distracted, âThat wasnât part of the plan. She told me she was throwing me out of the car and driving off.â You note the blush lighting up Kellyâs cheeks as she talks with Pam, before turning your attention back to Jim. You hadnât realized you leaned in this close- or did he lean in as well? His face was next to yours, close enough to share a kiss.
âShall we head inside? Guys?â You both jump apart, and you look guiltily over to Pam, who spoke. She only smiled in response, throwing a thumb over her shoulder. âWe could grab a booth?â
The night was going well. It didnât really feel like a date like Kelly had hoped it to be, but instead a nice get-together of a couple friends. You all laughed constantly, telling stories and jokes from the office, while also sharing your own lifeâs stories. No one really talked about their own life outside of the office while they were working, so it was a refreshing twist on things. You felt drawn even closer to the lot of them- Jim, especially, as he couldnât seem to drag his eyes away from you for too long. You werenât sure, but you thought it was Jimâs leg under the table pressing against your own. You hoped so, anyway.
âBut, yeah, Toby is so weird! You guys donât get that vibe?â Pam continues, giggling as she sips her mixed drink. Jim and Kelly were the only two keeping away from the alcohol, but you had ordered your favourite mixed drink and had slowly been sipping on it. You knew you werenât drunk yet, but you were pleasantly tipsy.
âNo?â You hesitated, trying to think back over the times youâve interacted with him. It was more often than most since you worked in the annexe, but he always seemed like a nice, if tired, man.
âItâs cause he has a crush on you,â Kelly nods, laughing alongside Jim. Pam blushes, shaking her head quickly.
âOh, no, of course not.â
âWell, Kelly would know,â Jim points out with a grin, raising his glass to his mouth and taking a large gulp. You watch confusion rush across Pamâs face, while Kellyâs turns a bright shade of red. She mouthed his name behind her cup, giving him a stern look.
âWhat does he mean by that?â She asks, looking between you and Kelly, then back at Jim. âWhat do you mean?â
âOh,â You begin, laughing under your breath. âJust that Kelly has a lot of experience talking with Toby. He was the one who moved her into the annexe, after all. It almost seems like they have a lot in common?â You end it with a question, trying your best to be vague. Jim almost spits out his drink with his laugh, turning to cough into the crook of his arm.
You hear Pam question, âYeah, why were you moved into the annexe?â Right as Kelly mumbled from beside you, âNot that much in common. Like one thing.â You and Jim meet eyes, trying to keep the humour from your faces.
The rest of the night passed in much the same way. You still were unsure about the whole âJim liking youâ bit but found yourself pleasantly hopeful. And it seemed like- if that was true- maybe Jim was trying to get back at Kelly by teasing her about liking Pam. You began to wonder if that was his plan all along, showing up with Pam randomly. Honestly, whether this was a double date or just a hang-out with friends, you found yourself enjoying the time immensely. But the night was wearing thin, and all four of you had work in the morning.
As you and Pam were helping each other out of the booths, making sure she hadnât forgotten her purse, Jim and Kelly had run off to pay the bill. You glanced over at Jim- probably with a longing look since you canât exactly help it, being slightly inebriated- and watched him lean in close to Kelly as they began whispering back and forth.
âHeâs a good guy, yâknow.â You look back over to Pam, eyes widening. âI donât know you well enough yet to know your thoughts on him, but he is a good guy. And he deserves the world.â You chuckle softly, nodding.
âYeah,â You say breathlessly, looking back over to him. He glanced up at the same time, and you canât help the smile crossing your face. âI think so too.â
âThen tell him,â Pam insists, and you look back down to her. âHe deserves to know that. He thinks heâs not worth your time, apparently.â
âThatâs ridiculous-â
âWhatâs ridiculous?â Jim asks as the other two rejoin you and Pam. Pam smiles brightly leaning over to take Kellyâs arm.
âThat you have to drive all the way across town just to drop me off, Jim!â
âActually, we were just talking about that,â Kelly mumbles, and you smile watching her attempt to hold eye contact with Pam unsuccessfully. âIf itâs okay with you, then maybe I could take you home? And Jim can take Y/N.â
âYes!â Pam practically yells out, and you chuckle softly. You look over toward Jim, seeing him already looking your way.
âIf thatâs alright with you?â He whispers, and you nod immediately.
âOf course it is, Jim.â
âGood,â Jim says, releasing a breath as if with relief.
âGood,â You parrot, reaching forward boldly to take his hand. âLead on, then.â
Once you and Jim make it to his car, you both wait before getting in to make sure Pam and Kelly are in their car safe and buckled. Once Kelly begins pulling out, Jim turns to you and leans in closer. âI had a fantastic time today.â You laugh, nodding along, leaning against his car and gravitating toward him.
âI did too. âWas surprised that Pam showed up, though.â
âWell, Kelly did say it was âthe officeâ going out for drinks. I thought itâd be fine.â
âWell, she didnât actually mean the office, apparently. She was just trying to get us alone.â You shrug, smirking up at him. His deer-in-headlights look was gone now, for some reason. He seemed bold, leaning closer and taking your hand.
âAnd if it was? Would that have been fine?â You laugh again, nodding slowly.
âThat wouldâve been perfect.â His face slowly loses his teasing look, turning serious- but soft.
âY/N,â Your name is husky in his mouth as he begins leaning closer, and you can smell his cologne in the air. Everything was so much, his smell, his body heat, his honey-brown eyes as he took up your entire vision. âCan I kiss you?â
âPlease,â You whisper in return and meet him halfway as your lips crush together. He pulls the hand not holding yours to your face, lightly caressing your cheek throughout the heated kiss, and you grab hold of his hip with your own free hand, pulling him closer. You can feel him moan through the kiss, turning his head to deepen it. This was nothing like youâve dreamed of- but oh, so much better.
When you two finally part, breathing heavily, heâs pressing you against his car with the length of his body. You both pant as you stare into each otherâs eyes, and your grip slowly loosens on his hip. Eventually, he pulls away, clearing his throat with a blush. âWow,â He whispers, a smile growing as he looks at you bashfully.
âYeah,â You agree just as quietly, and Jim moves to open the passenger door for you. âOh, right. Thank you.â
As you sat down in Jimâs car, ready to be driven home, you canât help but think: âMan, I love working for Dunder Mifflin. Even the bad days can turn into the best ones.â

Quick doodle I did of Dwight, Jim and Pam.
So...I recently re-watched The Office for the fourth time and I couldn't help but fell in love with these three idiots (again). I also like Ted Lasso and thought the picture I used for reference really suits them. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the drawing!
